LOL
Yet another collection of random links and rantings of a greying unix geek with a photography bent. Pass the Guinness and Grecian Formula.

LOL

Yeeee haaawwww!

So totally staged, and it would also work just fine without the motivational-poster treatment.
Perfect.
This is the kind of staged photography I could see myself getting into….

My buddy Norm and I, winners of the 1986 DeVRY Calgary scholarships. A really badly composed (and badly aging) polaroid taken by the local news rag, The Bowden Eyeopener.
We both, and another also, had won that goofy t-shirt earlier in the year at a high school computer programming competition hosted at Red Deer College. Time limited programming tasks to create several animations and basics of a game using Apple //e systems.
We were one of the only few teams that actually used the AppleBasic ’shapes’ feature and double-buffering technique for smooth animation. We were thus able to spend more time on moving things around under user control. Other teams barely got anything on the screen at all.
Norm went on to finish his Electronics college degree at DeVRY Arizona after the first 2 years in Calgary.
I was a two times dropout, and later a SAIT drop out as well. I had more fun, spent more time, helping other students with their projects than doing my own work. At DeVRY I wasn’t very interested in learning more about COBOL or CICS.
Eventually I stumbled upon UNIX and started my self learning path by buying some AT&T manuals and writing things using every system call as I went along. Using a Heathkit H19 terminal and a 2400 baud modem nailed up 24×7 to a friend’s Interactive UNIX 386 system (a whole 8 MB of ram!)
I paid for the modem and phone line on the other end as well, and spent all of my time outside of work hacking away on it.
